“And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.” Luke 12:07
In one of my very first Bible studies I ever participated in one of the leaders gave us a homework assignment outside of our already lengthy homework assignments. She said, go and find your birthday verse. This was a new phrase to me, well most phrases at church were new to me. I had only been attending church for a couple of years and there was so much to learn, and I felt very much behind the eight ball on my Christian education. She explained that we should go into every book of the Bible and look to the verse and chapter that coincided with our birthday and see if we can find an encouraging verse. My first thought was more homework. The homework was already taking about forty-five minutes to an hour to complete (remember I was very new to Bible study). My second thought was I probably do not have a birthday verse. How can every birthday have an encouraging verse? I took the challenge and decided to see for myself that very day. I was intrigued to see if there was a verse with my birthday day.
So I started in the beginning.
Genesis 12:7 says “Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, ‘I will give this land to your descendants.’ And Abram built an altar there and dedicated it to the Lord, who had appeared to him.”
I remember thinking, well that is ok. What are the odd that my birthday verse is in the first book of the Bible. Moving on…
Exodus 12:7 says “They are to take some of the blood and smear it on the side and top of the doorframes of the houses where they eat the animal.
OK, now that is simply weird. I made it all the way through the old testament with an encouraging verse. As I got to the new testament, I was kind of just going through the motions, convinced I was not going to find a birthday verse.
Matthew 12:07, “But you would not have condemned my innocent disciples if you knew the meaning of this Scripture: ‘I want you to show mercy, not offer sacrifices’.
Well this will be embarrassing to have to report back that there is no birthday verse for me. I am more than halfway through the Bible. Then I turned to Luke.
“And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So do not be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.”
I had to re-read and check the verse and scripture to make sure it was really 12:07. There it was, there was a scripture for me. The thought of finding this still brings a smile to my face. It brings a smile to my face because I had a verse that was just mine. Well mine and every other person born on December 7. As I thought about this verse, I meditated on it for a little bit. The very hairs on my head are numbered. God knows how many hairs are on my head at any given moment. WOW! I am more valuable that a flock of sparrows. The verse right before it Luke 12:06, “what is the price of five sparrows-two copper coins? Yet God does not forget one single one of them. Two copper coins is the equivalent of one penny. Sparrows have almost no monetary value yet he still cares take care of them. If God cares for them, we are (I am) far more valuable than they are. I let that sink in and over the next several years I would think about it from time to time. But it wasn’t until my divorce that I really began to allow it to sink in and clung to this verse. I would recite this over and over. I am worth more than a flock of sparrows. I am more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows. Birds quickly became a decorating theme in my home as a constant reminder of how valuable I am to God. What came out of this was a mantra I say in the dark days, when I wonder if God sees my struggles or see how hard I am trying. This verse reminds me that He sees me, He hears me, I am valuable to Him and He is watching out for me and planning my future right now! I can reassure myself to not be afraid, this is a season and seasons change and God is working on my behalf in that moment.
When I worked at a church, we would rotate to do staff devotionals each week. I did a devotion on this very topic and looked up everyone on staff’s birthday verse and made a little postcard for each of them with their special birthday verse. It was a fun exercise, so I decided to do it over on my Instagram page. Each day on my page (link) I will post the birthday verse for the day. I would be beyond thrilled if you tag someone who is celebrating a birthday that day. What a special and quick way to let someone know you are thinking of them and God gave them a special positive verse that they can speak over themselves.
